READING

  • DECODING

I have extensive experience working with kids with Dyslexia and decoding/encoding challenges.

In schools, much of my work was in a 5th grade classroom in the Newton Public School System with general education students and those with language-based learning disabilities, many of whom were dyslexic.

Since leaving the classroom, I have continued privately tutoring children for over 17 years with these learning profiles from grades K-12.

  • COMPREHENSION

Specific skills can be taught with narrative text and expository text. For narrative text, I teach story/text structure in addition to skills such as inferencing, vocabulary skills, making connections, drawing conclusions, asking questions, etc. With informational text I use the following programs to teach skills such as main ideas, highlighting, notetaking, etc.:

•Unlocking Sentences (Bonnie Singer/Architects for Learning)

•Brainframes (Bonnie Singer/Architects for Learning) used to identify main ideas, highlight important info., note taking, and breaking down paragraphs to derive meaning from text.
